Drawing and Painting in Devon!
“Francine and Susi are inspirational teachers. Patient and encouraging throughout. Everyone made significant progress. They took us out on “jaunts” to see parts of Devon we would not have been able to access on our own.
It was a joy just to spend a week relaxing and doing art whilst making new friends. A tremendous week, I thoroughly recommend it.”Jane, Berkshire, UK
2025 Drawing and Painting for ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS
New dates for 2025 coming soon!
June 2025
Arrive 5pm Sunday- Depart 2pm Friday
For prices please see Coombe Farm Studios Website - link below
This course is designed for absolute beginners. Spread over five days, the aim is to be inspired, have some fun and gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to draw. If you have always wanted to draw and paint but are familiar with the ‘fear of the blank page’, or have the feeling that you can’t draw, or perhaps you just don’t know where to start, this course is for you!
We start by answering all those questions you were afraid to ask - what’s the difference between an HB pencil and a 6B pencil, why use charcoal? what’s a soft pastel and what’s an oil pastel? ink or watercolour? How to make objects look 3D. How to draw/paint a fabulous landscape.
Francine and Susi passionately believe that everyone CAN draw. We will show you the secrets to successful drawing that you probably weren’t taught at school.
Francine Lawrence and Susi Hoyle have taught hundreds of people to draw and given them the confidence to keep drawing.

If you would like to learn more about drawing and painting, and develop your creativity, why not spend a few days with us in the glorious Devon countryside?
Coombe Farm Studios near Totnes (direct train from Paddington) is a professionally run art centre with a light and airy converted barn studio, simple accomodation and delicious food! We also go out to secret gardens, hidden country lanes and the banks of the River Dart to draw.
Francine and Susi are experienced art teachers with lots of patience, so don’t worry if you are a beginner. Equally we’ll help you develop your skills if you have a little experience under your belt.
We teach two courses - one for Absolute Beginners, see details below, (treat yourself - or give this as a special big birthday gift!) and the other for Improvers (anyone who has done a few courses and wants to take the next step or learn some new techniques.)
We’ll be running more courses for Beginners and for Improvers next year 2025.
If you have any queries about the courses or nearby alternative accomodation please email Francine and Susi with any questions.
2025 Creative Painting & Drawing for IMPROVERS

Do you enjoy drawing and painting but feel a bit stuck? Not sure what the next step is? Perhaps you always paint the same subject in the same safe way but want to loosen up?
This five-day workshop will help you develop your drawing and painting skills, stretch your imagination and allow you to experiment with new mediums and ideas. Susi and Francine have been teaching together for over 10 years and have complementary teaching styles; both agree that “There is no such thing as making a mistake. Each mark you make has value, and ‘accidents’ are the first steps to creativity! It’s about enjoying the journey.”
The aim of the course is to produce bold artwork in any medium (except oils), and to help you mix it up! Don’t panic - we will set some exercises and guide you all the way. Acrylics and Indian Ink, gouache and pastel make fabulous combinations. By the end of the stay you will have tried something new and discovered a new direction. It’s a fun course!
